How do you properly set a manual slack adjuster?

Pull the release lever while turning the adjusting nut clockwise.

Screw the adjusting nut until the slack adjuster's end stops moving toward the air chamber. Then turn the nut a quarter of a turn in the other direction to pull the brake shoes away from the inside of the brake drum.

Tighten the adjusting nut with a hammer until it feels tight.
